Comparative Medicine

Brian E. Gordon, D.V.M
Research Associate Member

The Comparative Medicine group and the Laboratory Animal Resource Center, both led by Brian E. Gordon, D.V.M., provide a core support laboratory and service departments to OMRF scientists.

Transgenic, mutant and immuno-suppressed mice have dramatically changed biomedical research in the last decade. These animals are models for human disease such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, sepsis, neuro-degenerative diseases, arthritis, diabetes and immune-mediated diseases. Scientists often devote significant portions of their careers to the development of these genetically engineered mice. These important and valuable animals are often very difficult to maintain in a healthy and humane environment. The Animal Resource Center provides innovative, state-of-the-art facilities and care for research animals.

Comparative medicine is the science of examining the similarities and differences between the physiology and pathology of animals and humans. the goal of Comparative Medicine is to provide core support that enables scientists to gain an in-depth understanding of experimental animals. With the addition of new equipment and personnel, it is our goal to continue to advance our diagnostic, surgical, histopathological and imaging support to the future research efforts at OMRF.
