Looking to spice up your science class? Want to learn new skills? Learning from Bugs: For four weeks in the summer, teachers selected as Foundation Scholars will participate in this hands-on laboratory course at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City. With E.coli as our model organism, we will study how growth and genetics are influenced by dietary and environmental changes. Beginning with initial gateway procedures and taking an inquiry approach, Scholars will design and perform new experiments along thematic lines of gene expression, protein isolation, and enzyme function. Along the way, concepts from genetics, chemistry, biochemistry, population dynamics, and bioinformatics will be studied and discussed with state-of-the-art updates. These experiments use basic equipment and supplies so they are widely accessible and encompass many of the Oklahoma PASS objectives. Program Dates: June 8 - July 2, 2009 Qualifications: Oklahoma middle and high school science teachers with a minimum of three years of classroom experience Stipend: $2,000 plus $1,000 in lab/classroom supplies Deadline: March 1 (postmark) To apply: Complete and submit the application form.
